What is relationship counselling?

It doesn't matter if you’re on your own, married, living together, LGBTQI+, non-monogamous or anything in between - we’re here to help you strengthen your relationships.

Lots of people have an idea of what relationship counselling is and think that you only need counselling when things get really bad. But we’re here whenever you need us, no matter what situation you face in your relationship. Even if your problems seem trivial, or even if you don’t have problems at all, we’re here to help.

Relationship Counselling

Our counsellors provide a caring, supportive and non-judgmental environment to help you find a way through any difficulties you may be facing in your relationship/s.

Together we will first help you to identify and clarify the issues or problems you are facing in your relationship/s.

If relationship counselling is the best way forward, you will embark on a series of counselling sessions – anything between six and twelve sessions is usual, but it will depend on the issues that you want to address.

All partners don’t always have the same goals at the start, but to ensure counselling is maximally helpful we’ll work together to establish and agreed focus.

For some people, counselling is the start of a longer process of discovery while for others, a few sessions of counselling may be all they need to get through a rough patch. You will be able to discuss your expectations with your counsellor.

What to expect

Counselling is not a magic solution, and it isn’t easy. It will require commitment, engagement and hard work from everyone involved. Some people will find the experience strengthens their relationship. Others will realise separating and moving on independently is the best option for them. Not everyone in the relationship might end the process feeling the same way.

If you do decide to separate we can help you to manage that process as painlessly as possible, including communicating the decision to friends, family, and any children that might be involved.

Another thing to keep in mind is that just because you start your counselling journey with us, that doesn’t mean we’ll necessarily be the right fit. Our main priority is that you get the best help possible, and we recognise that might not always come from us. In those cases we will always try to help you find the support you need from another source.
